Allwood Doster Jr. would hold the bus for one particular passenger on his Detroit bus route in 1978: Gloria Gowens. The pair dated, wed, and remained inseparable through 20 years of marriage. Gowens, now Gloria Doster-Ayers, said he was her soul mate, someone she never imagined she'd lose. In August 1999, three days after his 47th birthday, Doster died of a massive heart attack.
